Are professional headshots actually worth it for business owners?
If you’re a business owner, entrepreneur or professional looking for professional headshots in Swindon or the surrounding Wiltshire area, understanding the impact a strong headshot can have on your business might surprise you.
In a world where most first impressions happen online – on LinkedIn, your website, Google, press features, networking platforms – your headshot is often the very first thing people see.
And rightly or wrongly, first impressions happen fast – people form beliefs and feelings of someone within milliseconds of seeing a face. Whether that feels fair or not, it’s reality … and it’s not changing any time soon.
Research referenced by publications such as Forbes talks about studies that have been conducted on faces and first impressions, using both photos of real people and computer-generated faces, that established the power of those first 100 milliseconds.
And other studies showed that even actual experience didn’t correct inaccurate first impressions!
So the real question isn’t “Are professional headshots worth it? – Or are they just a “nice extra” you can put off for another year?”
It’s:
Are you making that first impression work for your business?

Plus, here are 12 reasons why professional headshots help.
1. You create a strong first impression
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
Before someone reads your credentials or services, they’ve already formed an opinion based on your image.
A professional headshot:
-
Shows you in the best light (literally)
-
Communicates credibility
-
Helps people feel reassured before they even speak to you
- Positions you as established and confident
It’s not about vanity.
It’s about trust.
2. It’s a long-term investment (Not a short-term expense)
Read on to see for yourself!
Imagine your headshot session (or a 1 hour brand shoot with me!) costs £249 and you receive 15 varied images:
-
Head & shoulders
-
¾ length
-
Full length
-
Incorporating relevant props
-
Vertical/portrait profile photos
-
Horizontal images for websites and banners
You use those images across:
-
Your website
-
LinkedIn
-
Email signature
-
Business cards
-
Printed materials
-
Social media
-
Press features
If those images support your marketing for 18 months, that works out at roughly 45p per day for consistent visual branding.
Now compare that to one cappuccino a week at Costa over the same period…(£360) 👀
Headshots vs coffee unexpectedly becomes an interesting comparison – and suddenly headshots don’t seem quite so extravagant, do they?!
Instead they’re a long term, essential, asset for your business.
3. Search engines and algorithms love high-quality images
It’s not just people who notice good images – search engines and social media platforms do too.
Platforms like Google and LinkedIn favour high-quality, original images because they help create better user experiences. Websites that include professional imagery often perform better in search results than those filled with generic stock photos or low-resolution images.
Why? Because original photos signal that your content is authentic, relevant and trustworthy.
So whilst stock images can be confusing for clients (imagine if they see the same image on both your and your competitors website 😬), they can also be damaging to SEO too!
LinkedIn itself rewards professional images in profiles
Profiles with recent, high-quality images:
-
Appear more frequently in search results
-
Receive more connection requests
-
Generate stronger response rates
LinkedIn’s own blog 10 Tips for Taking a Professional LinkedIn Profile Photo, regularly highlights the importance of profile optimisation and shows that just having a picture makes your profile 14 times more likely to be viewed by others.
You can even test perceptions and opinions of your current headshot on platforms like Photofeeler, which ranks how competent, influential and likeable your image appears to strangers. (Be warned – it can be brutally honest!)
So, a professional headshot isn’t just about looking good – it’s also working behind the scenes to support your online visibility and discoverability (remember to use keywords in your image names and alt tags, to boost this too!)
While you might be investing in photos primarily for your website or LinkedIn profile, they can also help your content work harder for you in search engines and social platform algorithms.
4. It’s more affordable (and less scary) than you think
When you consider the advantages of a great headshot, and the equipment, knowledge and experience from the photographer, prices headshot photographers charge are usually pretty reasonable!
Having a great headshot will pay off, with more opportunities and a higher professional status, however most business owners really already know this…. but just don’t like being in front of the camera!
Many of my clients in and around Swindon / Wiltshire tell me the same thing before their session:
“I’m really nervous.”
“I don’t like photos of myself.”
“I have no idea how to pose.” (You don’t need to know how to pose, by the way – That’s my job!)
And almost every single one says afterwards:
“That wasn’t as bad as I thought.”
“That was actually really enjoyable.”
With the right lighting, guidance and a relaxed approach, headshots don’t have to feel stiff or intimidating.
In fact, they often feel empowering (more about this in the next section).
5. It boosts your confidence
So many people say:
“I don’t like photos of myself.”
But let’s flip this, because often, the issue isn’t you… but the photos you’ve had taken before, whether you’ve never had professional lighting, direction or subtle posing guidance before.
A strong headshot can actually:
-
Change how you see yourself
-
Give you more confidence to show up online
- Walk into meetings or events feeling stronger
-
Make you more comfortable saying yes to opportunities
Confidence fuels visibility.
6. It shows authenticity and credibility
Be honest… are you still using a photo from 5 years ago, where you look a little younger and bright-eyed?!
Or a cropped wedding picture? Or even a heavily made up image – that is not how you show up generally?
An outdated, or too overly finished photo can create disconnect and mistrust when people meet you in real life.
An up-to-date professional headshot shows:
- Honesty
- Transparency
- Professionalism
It says: “This is me, as I am now.”
It also gives you credibility in your field – picture a coach with a confident, professional headshot as their profile image. You’ll believe in what they have to say, you’ll trust that they can help you improve performance, and achieve goals because their photograph matches your expectations of a coach.
7. It makes you more memorable
According to research shared by Psychology Today, visual information dominates how our brains process the world. 90% of the information transmitted to the brain is visual.
When someone meets you at a networking event, they remember your face.
If your LinkedIn headshot, website and email signature all match that face clearly and professionally, you become easier to recall – and more likely to be contacted.
And why not take it a step further – something I always advise my clients is to add your headshot photo to your business card, leaflets and email signature too, then people will always remember who you are! (I’m sure we’ve all been there when you’re looking back at the collection of business cards you got from networking and you just can’t think who that person was! 🤦♀️
But what if that business card had their photo on it…?!
8. It strengthens your Personal Brand
You carefully choose:
-
Your brand colours
-
Your fonts
-
Your logo
-
Your tone of voice
But your headshot is part of your branding too – think of it as your personal brand logo.
Having consistent professional headshot images across platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram, along with:
-
Your website
-
Press releases
- Corporate materials & literature
…makes you look cohesive, recognisable, and trustworthy.
And for professionals in building connections within Wiltshire’s business communities, that strong, consistency really helps people to remember you and your brand.
9. It shows you take your career seriously
Investing in professional headshots sends a message that you:
- value your business
- take your profession seriously (and in turn others will take you seriously too)
- respect others who put their investment in you
- care about how you present yourself to clients, employers, and co-workers
Whether you’re a business person in Swindon, an entrepreneur in Marlborough, or a creative in the Cotswolds, refreshing your LinkedIn headshot, or updating your actor portfolio, communicates professionalism instantly. It says,“I’m here, I’m professional, and I’m ready to help.”
10. It’s not “Just for Actors”
Yes, actors rely heavily on headshots.
But they’re equally important for:
-
Business owners
-
Corporate teams
-
Freelancers
-
Public speakers
-
Consultants
-
Students entering the workforce
In an increasingly online world, that tiny profile image matters more than ever.
11. It’s about skill – Not just a good camera
One of the biggest myths?
“Anyone with a good camera can take a headshot.”
Owning a professional camera doesn’t automatically mean someone knows:
-
How to pose people naturally
-
How to read micro-expressions
-
How to help nervous clients relax
-
How to use lighting to sculpt faces properly
Headshot photography is as much about psychology and communication as it is about technical skill.
The best images happen when someone feels at ease. And helping someone feel relaxed in front of the camera can sometimes be more important than the camera itself!
So before you pick a photographer to take your photos, check them out a bit more and make sure you’ll be comfortable being photographed by them… because if you’re not comfortable, it will show in your photos!
12. You never know when you’ll need it
Imagine receiving news that you’re going to be featured somewhere exciting…
A magazine feature.
A podcast interview.
A press release.
A networking presentation.
An award nomination.
A speaking opportunity.
… and only having a cropped selfie to submit.
Brilliant opportunities deserve brilliant imagery, yet sometimes you don’t get much notice.
Having professional headshots ready means you’re always prepared for the unexpected.
So… Are professional Headshots worth it?
Absolutely.
Your headshot isn’t about ego.
It’s about opportunity. And a very strategic and important business tool for your business, brand and online visibility!
Professional headshots help with:
-
Website SEO – Google prefers unique images over stock photos used across thousands of websites
-
Engagement – people are far more likely to click on and interact with posts that feature real faces
-
Personal branding – recognisable images help people connect your name to your face
-
Algorithm visibility – platforms tend to prioritise content that keeps people engaged
You don’t need to be “model material.” or to look perfect. It’s about looking:
-
Authentic, yet Professional
-
Approachable, yet Confident
-
Engaging, yet Trustworthy
A strong headshot communicates all of that without a single word.
And in competitive markets – including here in Swindon and the surrounding areas, that can be the difference between blending in and standing out.
Frequently Asked Questions about professional headshots
Q. How often do I need to update my headshot?
A. In my opinion there isn’t a correct amount of time – if things have changed with you – whether that’s physical (different hair, weight change, etc) or non-physical, like a change in direction of your brand/brand values/ideal clients, then that is a time that you definitely should update your headshots!
Other than that, a good rule of thumb is probably every 2–3 years, to try to stary current. The main thing is when people meet you in person, you look like the person they recognise from your social media profile, website or marketing materials.
Q. What should I wear for a professional headshot?
A. Choose clothing that reflects your industry while still feeling like you. Wear clothes that you feel comfortable and confident in – if you’re not comfortable in what you’re wearing it will show in the photos!
Simple, outfits in solid colours tend to work best on camera. Avoid busy patterns, large logos or anything overly distracting.
If you’re unsure, your photographer should guide you before the session so you feel confident and prepared – I offer a guide with tips (or more in-depth outfit planning with clients for brand shoots).
Q. Do I really need a professional headshot for LinkedIn?
A. Yes – or at least it definitely helps! Not only do LinkedIn profiles with a professional photo receive significantly more profile views and connection requests. But a clear, approachable headshot helps people recognise you and trust you,. It also shows potential clients or employers that you mean business!
Q. Can I just use a phone photo instead?
A. Modern phones have excellent cameras, however professional headshots are about much more than the camera itself. Lighting, composition, background choice, and subtle posing all plays a role too – this is where your photographer comes in 😉
